Klemtu, owned and operated by the Kitasoo Xai'xais First Nation
Spirit Bear Lodge sits in the Indigenous community of Klemtu, with only 12 rooms in total. Guests fly from Vancouver to Bella Bella and continue by boat to the lodge in Klemtu. Each day runs from the lodge, with boat trips of about 1.5 hours to the bear viewing areas, and evenings back at the lodge. On the departure day, a Big House cultural farewell is followed by the return journey to Vancouver South Terminal.
The seasons have clear roles. Spring is mainly grizzly bear season. Fall brings the salmon runs, and some fall days are dedicated to searching for the spirit bear, while other days focus on grizzly bears, whales and coastal wolves. Daily plans adjust to recent sightings, tides and weather, which is normal on this coast.
Two honest notes. First, a spirit bear sighting cannot be promised. The lodge name points to it and most guests hope for it, but the bear is elusive, and we describe the chances by season and guide experience only. Second, good mobility is essential. Boarding boats over rocky shorelines and walking lodge trails are part of every day, and the lodge states this clearly. Guests with knee, back or walking limitations should talk to us before deciding.
